What is Bowen Therapy?
Bowen Therapy is a Remedial, non-invasive body technique with a multidimensional approach to pain relief, healing and relaxation.
The Bowen Technique which is named after the late Tom Bowen, has been achieving remarkable results over the past 50 years.
The Bowen ‘moves’ are very distinctive and are applied to specific locations on the body. The therapist uses thumbs and fingers to make subtle rolling type moves to stimulate muscles, tendons, ligaments or nerves in the body. This enables signals to be delivered to the nervous system, activating a healing response, assisting in correcting any dysfunctions that may be present and aiding in restoring the body to homeostasis (balance).
A key element in the way Bowen Therapy works, is that it addresses the whole body, as well as being able to focus on chronic or acute conditions, health problems or injuries.
Whilst the pressure used throughout a treatment is quite subtle and extremely light, this form of therapy can be beneficial for almost every’BODY’ and is considered appropriate for people of all ages including babies, children, the frail, the elderly, pregnant women and athletes. There are very few, specific circumstances where Bowen Therapy is contraindicated.
A typical session usually lasts around 45-60 minutes, this depends on the areas of concern that the client may have and varies from person to person. During the session, the therapist will leave pauses between sets of moves which are necessary to allow the body time to take in and process the information to begin the healing process.
An initial set of 3 treatments is recommended, scheduled between 5-7 days apart to achieve the best results. Depending on the condition and how the clients responds to the treatment some may need additional or on-going treatment.
At the completion of the session aftercare advice will be given to each client emphasizing the importance of movement, the drinking of water, waiting for a response and the return for treatments. For up to 10 days after the session, your body will still be processing and integrating the information it has received to assist healing.
It is important that for the first 24hours after a treatment avoiding strenuous exercise or exertion and making rest a priority.
The Bowen Technique should be considered for:
- Back and hip pain and sciatica
- Digestive and bowel problems
- Earache and TMJ problems
